It looks as though Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is already breaking records, with the film’s makeup department creating
Director James Gunn tweeted that the prosthetics in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel are officially world record-breaking.
“Just heard from our makeup folks at @LegacyEffects that yesterday #GotGVol3 officially passed the World Record for “the most makeup appliances created for a single production” (surpassing The Grinch). Congrats, guys! Thanks for keeping practical effects alive!”
‘Makeup appliances’ refers to elements of prosthetics added to actors to help create their charcaters’ visual look – think Drax’s scars in the Guardians movies. This emphasis on practical effects has already been praised by fans, who asked him how much control he has over the balance between practical and visual effects. “100%” he responded.
The previous record holder for most makeup appliances in a single production was The Grinch, which also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup in 2001.
Guardians of the Galaxy saw the rag-tag group first come together in 2014 with surprising success. The little-known comic book heroes made a startling transition to the screen, and with a huge box office haul, the Guardians quickly saw a sequel greenlit.
Since then, they’ve appeared in “Avengers: Endgame” and become a permanent fixture of the MCU. Not bad for a bunch of comic book characters nobody had heard of years earlier.
Actor Chukwudi Iwuji recently revealed that his Guardians of the Galaxy 3 role casts him as an “Extremely powerful” and “complex” character alongside Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock. Director James Gunn has also recently wowed comic book fans with his DC superhero series, Peacemaker, starring John Cena as the titular hero.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, and Vin Diesel as Groot. They’re joined by Karen Gillan, Elizabeth Debicki, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Will Poulter.
James Gunn both wrote and directed the movie based on characters created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
