Netflix has announced that production for The Witcher Season 3 has begun, with Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan all returning for more dark magic and treachery.
The streamer shared a photo from the snowy set of The Witcher’s third season, featuring three of the main cast members in character ready for the cameras to start rolling on the next chapter. Season 3 is based on the second novel in The Witcher saga by author Andrzej Sapkowski, focusing on the rising tension between the Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaard.

Netflix divulged more details about the plot by way of a synopsis that reads as follows: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line—or risk losing each other forever.”
The cast and showrunner of The Witcher have previously spoken about the future direction of the show’s planned seven seasons, and how the original novels will be the guiding light. Henry Cavill revealed his hopes for Season 3 to be loyal to the books “without too much in the way of diversions,” especially when it comes to the relationships between the core characters.
There isn’t a release date for the third season yet, but The Witcher: Blood Origin will be released this year. This new six-part prequel series will show the creation of the first Witcher as well as the events leading to the Conjunction of the Spheres: a cosmic occurrence that allowed different dimensions to briefly merge and bring magic to The Continent.
